Prediction can go wrong but not planning for future!

While Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are busy taking out dirty linens from each other’s drawers in public, pollsters and respective supporters are agog and busy predicting fate of their candidates in US presidential campaign.

During annual examination, a student is always eager that someone could correctly predict whether he/she would get through or fail. Many people, who have not been successful in their previous job interviews, visit astrologer or tarot card reader to know whether they would get through in next interview.

But, we seldom think, what would happen, if we know our future in advance. If a student knows that he/she would get thru in examination, he/she would stop to prepare. If a sportsman knows ahead of time that his team would be defeated, he would have no heart to play. There would have been no need to spend billions of dollars and bloodbath of words, if the two contestants in current US election knew their actual fate.

So, correct knowledge of our future can instantly kill our thoughts, talent, thrill … and lot more; yet most of us incessantly keep searching or worrying about our future.

Is your future and fortune predictable?

There are modern methods and tools to predict things in advance – surveys, statistical algorithms, mathematical models and now Big Data.

Then, there are age old practices of astrology, horoscopy, palmistry, numerology and many more, practitioners of which insist that these are based on science though some surmise it is divine driven. That is not true. Science is always in black and white; whereas these practices thrive on what is gray. As regards divine hands, it is a clear case of what we fear but can’t fathom, we tend to defer it to domain of faith or god.

All of above tools or techniques are fundamentally governed by law of probabilities. If prediction of fortune teller is closer to higher probability, it has higher chance of coming true and turns out to be false, in case of low probability.

For a variety of reasons, we are saddled with one or more of following perceptions:

  • Our future gets defined by our birth time or zodiac sign.
  • Our future is predefined and stored somewhere, which keeps rolling in – how? Not known.
  • Our fortune has been written on our forehead – by who? God or genes?
  • When we think or dream of future, we are actually dipping into same.
  • When past time vanishes, future is already waiting with its wings (where?) to become visible.

None of above is true. Even science has failed to define correctly what future time is.

When you think or dream of future, you actually do it on basis of past memories or images. Past time is what gets stored as your memory and present time is what you witness now. Frame of present time keeps changing based on what happens now and we perceive it as future. Truly speaking, future is nothing but “Next Now” in relation to “Current Now”!

You can plan and prepare your future; actually you have been doing that!

To build your future and bring fortune, all that you need is to follow following 4 mantras or mandates:

  1. Become capable of earning without clamoring for it.
  2. Be committed to growth without being greedy.
  3. Be competent to hold and handle without hoarding it.
  4. Be dynamic without doubting or dithering.

World generally follows only left highlighted part of above 4 mantras but that can push probability only little above 50%. If you want to make it 100%, additionally follow right parts of these mantras all the more rigorously.

Then, you are set to enjoy fabulous future and fortune!

Choice to make your body “tidy and tough” or “tardy and toxic” is with you!

You come across some people, who are very smart and strong or cultured and caring. Then, you bump into people, who are highly dynamic but dreaded like dynamite! You enamor those, who are very successful and rich. But, you don’t like those, who are controversial and complaining types. There are many, who eat healthy food and have healthy habits; but their health is not on their side. But then there are others, who cannot afford healthy food; however, they enjoy good health.

What makes people so diverse, even if they are brought up in similar environments? Let us look at what studies on subject suggest:

Researchers in San Diego, USA examined life records of about 30,000 Chinese-Americans about 2 years back and compared with randomly selected 400,000 white people. They found that Chinese-American die significantly earlier by as much as 5 years, particularly those attached to traditional Chinese superstitions! Their research revealed that it is not because of genetic factors or life style, but belief of Chinese-Americans that they would die younger, since stars have hexed them and that manifests in shorter life span!

A TIME magazine special issue sometimes back had showed that happiness, hopefulness and contentment reduce risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, cold and upper respiratory infections. Now, imagine the looks and physique of people, who are happy and hopeful; they are bound to be ones, you would love!

Look at some of the speakers at TED Talks. Those, who impress you most, would have healthy body, impressive body language and well balanced. Ones, who sound boisterous, would be seen by you as toxic and others with blemish tones would look terrible to you!

Makeup of your body reflects makeup of your mind and vice versa!

Look at some real life observations:

  1. Body of flexible natured people is supple; whereas rigid people have stiff body, which gradually develops muscle and joint pains.
  2. Chest of confident people opens well, they automatically breathe well and sleep well. On other hand, people with anxiety sweat more, lose body water and sleep, and their skin becomes slack over time.
  3. Facial skin of serene people is tight and that of stressed people develops wrinkles or lines early hood.
  4. People with lot of biases develop allergies frequently, which eventually weaken their immune system.
  5. Short tempered or sensitive people catch cold and infections often and impair their body language! 
  6. If you accumulate tension over longer time, you would tag along host of problems from numbness to cancer.
  7. People with toxic nature are known to produce more toxins in their body!

Your thoughts and body work in sync!

If you believe that your thoughts and body work independently, you are grossly mistaken. Scientific and clinical fact is mind through its thoughts impacts brain and brain passes that impact to rest of our body through neurotransmitters. Our thoughts and body have bidirectional communication via neurotransmitters.

So, your thoughts affect your body instantly, though most people do not realize it immediately. Generally, when such effect builds up, then you experience it. Check on following in your daily life:

  • You get tired of working. So, you stop, take a break and try to relax. What is relaxation?
    You create a thought to loosen your muscles or body. That thought triggers thru brain the neurotransmitters to reach parts of body, you want to relax – say shoulders or legs, direct more blood to circulate and loosen muscles/nerves around those parts.
  • You reach your office and learn that elevators are not working. Instantly, you feel tired merely by idea of climbing up staircase.
    What is it? It is a thought, which connects your brain to body, specially legs and spine, and tightens muscles/nerves there and alter blood supply levels to give you a feeling of tiredness.
  • Some dreams in your sleep, which are nothing but uncontrolled thoughts, wake you up fresh and others create fatigue!

So, your thoughts make your body relaxed or restless. A relaxed body communicates back to your brain via neurotransmitters to create thought/s of pleasure. This is turn triggers body to release happy hormones like Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin or Estrogen or mix of same! 

On other hand, if your body is restless, it would trigger thought of pain, which would connect up to your emotions like irritation, anxiety or anger.

Connection of thoughts and body is your cutting edge!

It is costless but priceless. This is how it works:

  1. If you think well, your body does very well!
    Wellness in your body would reward you back with rewarding thoughts or ideas.
  2. If you think ill, your body would initiate illness!
    Not that you would fall ill immediately; it is start of the process. Even God would not interfere in this, regardless how holy you are!!
  3. Your brain memory and body anatomy keep full account of your plus and minus thoughts!
    Your every thought – positive or negative – leaves its imprint on your memory and impacts your body via neurotransmitters. If it is 3 pluses and 2 minuses, what counts for your body is net impact – 1 plus and that is how it would build up in your body. Over time, you would experience its net good or bad effect. 
  4. Wrong thought for a right reason is wrong!
    One of the biggest misnomers is I can do wrong for a right reason. Reacting wrongly for the cause of God, faith, society or nation is retrograde. Your body would suffer. Your body can only recognize plus and minus, not the rationale or justification behind your thinking!
  5. What is at the back of your mind drives you most!
    At back of your mind known as subconscious mind resides past memories i.e. knowledge/information + emotions. Normally, you have no clue how much goes on in your subconscious mind. You are consciously thinking or doing one thing; but you are subconsciously thinking something else.
    Now, challenge is – you have impression of doing it right; but if at back of your mind things are not going right like anxiety, doubts or disappointment, then it correspondingly generates negative effect on your body. It is for this reason that you may exercise and take healthy diet but if thinking is unhealthy, you always get partial results!
    It is best to be driven by your conscious mind, keep subconscious mind empty and secure best effect on your body!

So, shape your thoughts to shape your body accordingly! It is in your hands what you want to become – bold, beautiful, dynamic and/or debonair!!

Are Companies doing good job to pick & retain Stars and treat other Employees less important?

Every company faces this question and usually it is most reluctant to allow its stars to part ways. Retaining stars is not easy and is generally expensive. It can upset the balance of wages and/or organization structure and there is still risk that some or most stars would leave, living the management high and dry.

So, is it prudent to depend so much on star performers of the company?

Before, we answer above question, we need to assess whether companies are picking up their stars right!

One needs to be a Star to pick-up a Star!

To my knowledge, most companies worldwide are oblivious of above fact! It has been researched and also witnessed that consciously or unconsciously, following criteria go in shortlisting “stars”, “high potentials” or even “faces to watch”:

  1. 45% of stars are selected just of the basis of their “confident and stylish” or “assertive” communication skills, even when they are short on other qualities.
  2. 10% are selected, if their physical personality is good, with all other qualities of middle order and even when their temperament could be an issue.
  3. 19 to 20% are selected, if they are very sincere, hardworking and obedient, though they may lack dynamism, initiative or innovativeness.
  4. 17% are selected based upon bosses’ liking or disliking, whims and fancies.
  5. 2 to 3% are indeed good performers and shining.
  6. 6% are selected to fill the gap or list; being a familiar face is the only major consideration!

Above is an approximate break down of the basis, on which company management and its HR list their elites! This is a bitter reality of corporate life; most may not relish knowing. Let us not forget that it bears out of straight fact that you need to be a star to correctly identify and justify your choice. It raises a basic question, how many stars; a company is able to muster on its panel of selection? Sometimes no one!

So, first and foremost need is to set the process of picking stars right. If there are no stars on selection panel, management must accept its limitation and use the collective wisdom of members as wisely as possible.

The bottom line is that most companies are unable to do a good job in picking its stars!

Dependability on and of Stars

Should companies rely on their Stars? Yes, they should and put stacks on them, provided company can keep them challenged, offer a career path, which appeals to them and provide opportunities accordingly, while strategizing that it does not impact organization structure adversely. It is possible to do this by proper planning.

If an organization holds too many stars, it may create friction, unless the management is of super star caliber! There is high risk of collisions among stars and resultant firework would only hurt other employees!

Most stars may not hang around and therefore, their loyalty factor could be questionable. If the organization is big, then it is desirable to have more frequent job rotations for stars as opposed to other employees. They may still not latch on for too long; therefore, companies must always develop their backups. Beyond a certain point, it is not prudent to hold back a star, in terms of cost and creating opportunities for other employees.

Equal Development and Growth program for all

It is most effective that companies institute identical development and growth program for every employee in each of main functions like Sales, Technical, Finance, HR etc. and not make any differentiation between stars and others at program level. This would be a tremendous motivation and morale booster for all employees.

It is clear that high potential employees would go through such program faster by virtue of their performance and under performers would move slowly and some of them may not make even half way mark. Such program would automatically bring distinction between good, average and under performers. It would also bring strengths and weaknesses of individual employees on table and a right plan to address the weaknesses can be put in place.

This program should be dovetailed into chart or tree of career path, allow cross functions, when appropriate and should provide opportunity to everyone to reach top position in his/her function. Not that everyone can or would be capable of reaching; but he or she sees a path to reach and that would stimulate his/her efforts.

There is paramount need for companies to take such bold steps and throw challenges to employees.

Another critical point is some employees bring with them inherent qualities to become a star; but they are very few. Greater number is for whose potential to become star needs to be unlocked! At the core level, everyone has a potential. What is required is for Management and Managers (HR included) to lay down correct guidance, direction, program, coaching/mentoring to bring out startling results, which would convert:

Unpolished –> Polished –> Shining

Docile –> Dynamic –> Dazzling

Isolated/Introvert –> Imaginative –> Innovative

Drop ideas to retain; institute mission to “develop n grow talent”

Objective of companies or its HR to hire and retain employees have become outlandish and outdated! They should turn to mission “develop and grow talent”! If this is done, there would be automatic correction to their direction and retention would chase this mission!

Employees feel slighted when they are told time and again that management or HR’s aim is to retain them for company’s sake; instead, they should be encouraged to feel that they need to be there for their own sake and good!!

Moral of the Story

  • You need to be a Star to pick a Star!
  • Don’t be obsessed with Stars; create orbit (opportunities) for them to remain on course. If you can’t, be graceful to give them graceful exit or outside placement.
  • Treat stars and other employees on equal footing and give them identical program to develop. Survival of fittest would do the talking; so no need to show your preferences.
  • Everyone has a potential; if you fail to unlock, blame and amend your attitude and approach!
  • If management would do above, their company would dazzle and become darling of every employee!

Why Common man to Companies go into Cycles of Success & Failure, Rise & Fall…!

One of the most common phenomena, which common man to companies and countries all over the world encounter is cycles of success and failure, rise and fall, economic upturn and downturn, high and low in growth/business/personal life or even moods, good and bad, comfort and discomfort. Duration and intensity of such cycles may vary; but nobody seems to be free from facing these.

Are these cycles inevitable? Can we manage to prolong good part of cycles and postpone and shorten bad part? Fact of our life is that no one wants to go through bad patch or part.

Why we swing in opposite cycles

There are essentially 3 rules, which demand things to drive in opposing directions:

  1. Law of pairing of opposite properties
    Every human quality, characteristic, feeling or thought has 2 opposite properties or polarities (+ and -) and relevance of one is because of its opposite!
    For example, significance of good behavior is because of bad one; pleasure loses its meaning without pain; win has relevance only because of defeat or loss and vice versa.
  2. Law of attraction of identical properties and repulsion of opposite
    Unlike micro or particle level, at macro or human level, positive or good would attract positive or good qualities or thoughts. Likewise, negative thoughts or event would attract similar thoughts or events.
    Nothing actually remains in steady state or equilibrium; every parameter is constantly undergoing a change. This is analogous to 2nd law of thermodynamics, which states that heat energy or entropy of a system is continuously increasing and nothing can remain in equilibrium.
  3. Law of Conflict (or Collision) of Thoughts and Action (CoT & CoA)
    Whenever there is conflict of thoughts or interest with self or others, it would give rise to negative character. Same applies to actions through voice or body! This is analogous to Newton’s 3rd law of motion i.e. for every action, there is equal and opposite reaction.

The 3 rules create a range for each quality, whose 2 extreme ends are negative!

Are you surprised by above caption? It is absolutely true! Let me give 2 real life examples:

  • A new employee A in an organization is shy and shaky. He (no gender bias) would soon discover that such qualities are barrier to his growth. He would also observe that other employees, who are doing well, are generally confident and communicative. This would give him realization that positive parts of these qualities i.e. being confident and extrovert are essential. Possibly, he would evolve and learn positive parts of these qualities. If not, there would be potential conflict with expectations of his supervisor or management. So, he would be under compulsion to bring a change or bring himself down.
    Once employee A is confident and extrovert, he would attract similar thoughts to make himself more and more confident (rule 2). This trend could make him arrogant, when he would invite conflicting situations with colleagues or customers or company (rule 3)! This would lead him to setback or failure.
    In short, he goes through –ive to +ive to –ive cycles!
  • A supervisor B is laid back and docile; but feels very hurt when he hears adverse comments from his peers and see them rising. He swears to change or get mentored to become dynamic. He does accomplish that. Now, whenever he encounters those peers, he feels repulsive and become aggressive. As a result, his management again starts to rate him as poorly as before he became dynamic!

It also applies to Companies or Countries, as these are headed by individuals. If successes get into heads these Heads, they would lose heart (for people); whereas their failures would invariably get into their heart, whereby they would lose their heads and job too, triggering a change!

It is very important to understand that we tend to define a number of qualities as stand-alone; but factually, many of these are +ive or –ive version of same quality. To cite some examples:

  1. Shaky, confident and arrogant are not three different qualities; 1st and last are –ive versions of confidence. One could also term these as under and over confident. These 3 form a range:
    Shaky –> Confident –> Arrogant
  2. Likewise, Docile –> Dynamic –> Aggressive
  3. Reserved –> Communicative –> Over-communicative
  4. Weak or Frail –> Firm –> Ferocious or Fierce
  5. Passive (or detached) –> Passion –> Possessive (or fanatic)

From above, it is clear each human quality or character has a range, say 0 to 100%, where:

0 and 100% represent extreme ends of negative quality or character.

0 to 30% is approx. range, over which degree of negativity goes down incrementally.

30 to 70% is approx. band width; over which positive part incrementally move up.

70 to 100% is range, when negative part again reigns in increasing order and becomes most damaging.

It is invariably CoT or CoA as per rule 3, which is the cause behind 0 to 30% and 70 to 100% range of negativity!

Famous opposite cycles

  1. Acceleration of growth would eventually bring deceleration.
  2. Lots of learning leans towards liability.
  3. Perfection would rob you off flexibility.
  4. When your popularity rises, your vulnerability rises as well.
  5. Excellence would attract adversity.
  6. What goes up has to come down.
  7. When you come too close to someone, it either develops cracks or craze.

Our un-mindful drive to perform puts us into perils of opposite cycles

Our pursuit to continuously grow, do better without break, improvise our qualities incessantly or chase wins ceaselessly is bound to bring us onto dividing line between right and wrong, positive and negative.

The only solution is conscious passion and pursuits!

Our prejudices push us from positive to negative

Most of us are not able to help prevent prejudices, biases, ego and emotions to shadow our mind and we pay heavy price without realizing reasons underneath!

We perceive that we are in the positive range of our qualities – true; but when we get reminded of our prejudices, we would switch from positive to negative range. No doubt, we would revert back to positive range later; however, we have started the ball rolling for swinging in opposite cycles. Next incidence of ego getting evoked would again do similar damage.

How to prolong positive part of cycles and postpone/shrink negative!

  • We have been given jargon – “Sky is the limit for growth and goodness”! Junk it, as it is intellectual bankruptcy!
    Most important is to realize earthly realities.
  • Be mindful of your passion or pursuits; left and right hand sides of middle (which is positive) range, is invariably negative!
    Strive to remain in middle range – 30 to 70% of the scale.
  • Most eminent sign or signal that we have come to edges of middle range is “Conflict of Thoughts (CoT) or Actions (CoA) emerging with self or others”. Avoid these as far as possible.
    When we do this, we would automatically start dropping prejudices or other vices!
  • It would, then, enlighten and enrich our lives!!

We are killing our Innovative & Creative character by living in silos!

Everyone has or can develop creative and innovative elements in her/his character; but these come to surface depending upon how strongly or loosely she/he is shackled in her/his paradigm. To be creative or innovative is fundamental to our success; we seldom realize this! From housewives to heads of corporates and countries need these, if they want to live a life, which is easy yet eventful; fun but fruitful!!

In corporate world, we have a common catchphrase or cliché – thinking out of the box or thinking outside of the box. It more refers to think differently and seek new and novel solutions. This very much needs innovative and creative nature; but, here we are talking of a major step forward – do it most time and see how life gets transformed! The need is to get out of whatever you want to call it – the box, compartment, cell, shell or silo – for good.

Some argue that how can we get out of the box, because there is no space outside. The moment we talk about a box, we logically or scientifically imply that there is space (in present context, not physical but a mental one) outside! It is this space, which gives us understanding of the shape or psychological feeling of the box; otherwise it would be something undefinable!!

What inhibits us to be Innovative and Creative!

There are no few factors –

  1. Hallmarks of our habits.
  2. Parochial personality.
  3. Needling notions.
  4. Hard perceptions.
  5. Throttling traits.
  6. Compartmentalized thinking
  7. Preconceived ideas.
  8. Rigid faith.
  9. Our obsession and possessiveness.
  10. Our doctrines and dogmas.
  11. Our anger and anxieties.

All of above push you into your own paradigm or silo.

Watch, who can drive you towards silo!

But, never blame them, because eventually it is always you who decides to get in silo or not.

  • Autocratic and dogmatic bosses.
  • Masters, who believe in creating “not masters”; but “followers”!
  • Ideologists.
  • Celebrities, who become your idol/s.
  • Seniors, who create fear factors.

Why your life needs Innovation and Creation

Life is all about Change. If you are dormant to Change, life would degenerate. The other option is to remain dynamic with life and then it would start to change dramatically. Believe that this would automatically induce you to be innovative. You would start to think differently; think a new and novel.

Another important aspect – you cannot be truly successful without being agile. Your agility would automatically lead to becoming innovative and creative. If you don’t, your perception that you are agile is false.

We can classify people in 3 categories:

  1. Dormant
    They are immune to Changes. They suffer from either stagnancy or hyperactivity within their silos. This gives rise to 2 extremes – docile or dictatorial classes of people.
  2. Dynamic
    They are most amenable and agile to Changes. Rich dividends chase them. For them, life has no boundaries. They truly enjoy freedom of thoughts and hence, are inherently innovative and creative in every sense.
    This category leads to development of real talent – artists, visionaries, change agents and innovators.
  3. Dithering
    They swing between dormancy and dynamism. They mostly live in the silo /cell of their paradigm and occasionally come out of it to show their solidarity for Change, Innovation and Creation. Then, they go back into their cell. This category produces mostly mediocre.

World has vast majority of category 3 and least of category 2.

What to do to abandon your silo!

  • Don’t do, what most do! Most are apparently mistaken; otherwise, they would have been free from failures or miseries.
  • Being innovative and creative is critical to your sustained success.
    Many times, you may hear “Oh, it is not necessary”; just ignore because it only reflects ignorance of who says so!
  • Innovativeness and creativity are not privileges of just few by virtue of their genes or genius! You CAN and should do it!
  • Key to these qualities is “not to live in silos”.
  • You need to have WILL; do not waste time to open the silo, just smash it in 1st attempt!
    If you cannot do in 1st instance, you would find it difficult to do it in 2nd or 3rd attempt. See “1-2-3 & Go”.
  • You would then have:
    • Freedom of thoughts!
    • Thinking big outside of the box!!
