Fine dividing line between Passion and Obsession or Dogma/Doctrine!

Passion to live in a home! Source: http://www.flickr.com/

On the face of it, this topic may not be very interesting to you. But hang on a bit and think it over – you want to do what you love or you want to love what you do? Which of the 2 options you choose can make a difference of day and night! If you believe that, you must know the following:

In modern corporate life, time and again you would hear – you must be passionate about what you do; in other words, you must love what you do. How does that differ from desire to do? What happens, if your love changes to lust? Is it not the same as passion changing to obsession?

No leader had ever become laudable, unless he/she had passion for what he/she pursued! Look at some examples – Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos of Amazon Inc.

But, then there are also very successful personalities like Michelangelo, Michael Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio, David Beckham or Donald Trump – Republican Party hopeful for 2016 US Presidential election. They have been adjudged by many as obsessive. Even Charles Darwin was known to suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). How about Vladimir Putin – current Russian President, who is a real hero in the eyes of his countryman? He is dogmatic!

Now, see the effect of fine line between passion versus obsession or dogma. According to author Joshua Kendall, Steve Jobs was obsessive. Though he made Apple as the most imaginative successful company in the world, his obsession costed him happiness, health and family! Though Winston Churchill has been acclaimed as a passionate statesman, he had visibly showed signs of being dogmatic!!

Distinguishing passion from obsession or dogma/doctrine

Here below are the key differences among the three:

  1. Passion is consequence of consciousness; whereas obsession is an emotion and dogma/doctrine is driven by strong biases.
  2. Passion means mindfulness; on other hands, obsession is mindlessness and d/d is rashness or even madness.
  3. Passion is backed up by rationale; but the base of other two is rigidity.
  4. Passion thrives on reasonableness; obsession on recklessness and d/d on ruthlessness.
  5. Passion is coupled with consideration and kindness; however, the other two are devoid of concerns and cultivate cruelty.
  6. Foundation of passion is wisdom; but obsession is weird and d/d is vindictive.
  7. Passion allows freedom to focus on all aspects of what you are passionate about; other two generate fear as well as focus on single aspect of what you are obsessed or dogmatic about.
  8. Passion has peace! Obsession or dogma/doctrine has noise and turbulence!!
  9. Passion is what you implement for self; obsession and d/d are what you impose on others.
  10. An impartial observer would love you for your passion but hate you for your obsession and dogma/doctrine!

Notwithstanding the above, a very common and confusing element in three of these is very intense feeling, though in 3 different shades, for a person, object, idea or activity; only the method to execute the same and attitude underneath change!

Preventing to cross-over from passion to obsession or dogma/doctrine!

When you become passionate, you come on a slippery slope and can easily slip into obsession or dogma/doctrine and hence, always be aware of perils of the latter two illustrated in ten points above!

Catch the phrase mentioned in the beginning of this article once more – “What works – Do what you love or love what you do”. There is an extra-ordinary meaning behind this ordinary phrase!

If you do only what you love or like, you would run eminent risk of converting your love into lust; make a maniac. If your passion for beauty migrates to love for body, you would fall prey to obsession. If you love or respect only God or godmen, and not godly messages and acts, it would generate in you religious fanatic. Your focus or passion for your duties is what would turn into great performance and ownership; however, doing it for love or attracting attention of employer/s would no doubt brand you loyal but make you laggard!

If you only do what you like or love, you would tend to overlook or omit what you ought to do, because you may not love that. This is what seemed to have troubled Steve Jobs, Steve Ballmer, former CEO of Microsoft and several famous leaders.

True passion is to love what you do and not love for whom you do! Love your objectives and not the objects to achieve same! If you put your trust in this, you can never transgress into obsession or dogma or doctrine!!

Passion is always positive! Apart from bringing to you what is elaborated in above points, it makes you highly focused and dedicated, brings you tremendous purpose and ownership and promotes innovation and creativity at the same time. It is in your hands to develop your passions. Never carry false notion of passion being necessarily a gift of your genes. To be passionate for what all you do should be your top agenda!

Best option is to determine and develop passion after setting your goals. Whereas passion and goals are individually golden, alignment of the two together is what makes it platinum and that also helps you to prevent crossing the fine dividing line between what is desired and what is to be damned!

Like to be a real Leader? Create Contemporaries & not Followers!

Not sure, which subject is as extensively covered worldwide as “Leadership”. There are floods of articles by acclaimed to amateur people, development programs by management gurus, spate of theories, case studies and jargons on leadership. That shows its enormous importance and emphasis of top order. However, all of these have only created euphoria and excitement; but not leaders. It is a fact that world is hopelessly short of real leaders!

World of leadership could be very lopsided. This is the dilemma and delusion, most companies and communities have been facing. One of main reasons why leadership of many fails to cut ice is their inability to create contemporaries. It is hardly known to them that whole face of leadership radically changes, if its focus shifts to acquire competence to create contemporaries.

What tempts Leaders to create followers

Many think that demand and duty of a leader is to lead. In other words, others should follow. This defeats the very essence of leadership! It may be surprising to many that many qualities, which are essential for a leader, if not practiced properly, would trigger the temptation to create followers and resulting flaws. Here are some out of many:

  1. Strong personality of leaders (could lead to) –> Tendency to bulldoze their way and force others to follow their commands.
  2. Powerful communication –> Vice to hear own voice and discouraging others to voice their views.
  3. Passion to perform and show results –> Ruthless drive and walk over others’ concerns.
  4. Delivering commitments –> Coercing employees or people to perform and meet targets, without addressing their difficulties or barriers.
  5. Creating common vision –> Dictum for a common agenda; rather than working for a Change and creating consensus for a set of ideas.
  6. Drive to achieve goals –> Crushing resistance, friction or dissension in order not to lose the race and face.
  7. Believing in Self –> Disbelief in others, giving rise to arrogance and autocracy.
  8. Creating solid organization –> Carving hierarchy of followers, who then become leader’s favorite and blue eyed.
  9. Ethics and Ethos –> Showing stick for non-compliances without encouraging doing it by choice.
  10. Fostering company values –> Promoting values of self and in turn, own dogmas and doctrines, drilled in minds of people.
  11. Popular appeal –> Hooking audience to self through frenzy, fear or favor.
  12. Moral values –> Desire for going down in history with unique identity.

On left hand side above are the great values and qualities, which good leaders need to imbibe and endure. However, when they taste power and position, then under garb of leadership role, what they actually practice implicitly or explicitly are what is shown on the right side. They would do anything to get success and the best bet people find is to create followers through every mean available – fear, favor, frenzy or ferocity. Most leaders consider such approach justified, if they have to accomplish their objectives! This is how leadership degenerates and loses the luster!

Creating Contemporaries is a Game Changer!

If the focus of every leader changes to “Create Contemporaries”, it can bring a complete paradigm shift. It is an amazing game changer!

If ability, idea and intent of a leader are to create contemporaries, then he/she would automatically be driven to do the following:

  1. Respect everyone, regardless of competence, character, performance or experience.
  2. Inspire through ideas and persona.
  3. Motivate through empowerment and encouragement.
  4. Drive everyone to learn how to drive and not be driven.
Often, leaders talk about “drive”; but their action has exactly opposite tenor, if they create followers.
  5. Credit be given, not taken.
  6. Fairness to reign supreme and “liking or disliking, whims and fancy, biases and prejudices” to relegate.
Leaders take pride in talking about non-discrimination, equal opportunities and fair decisions; but when it comes to doing it, most have gap between what they preach and practice. Simple reason – their actual intention is to lead and not to create leaders!
  7. Empathy by lending ear and support to employees’ or people’s concern and issues.
  8. Leading by examples, leaving no gap between what one thinks, speaks and acts.
  9. True knowledge of Self & Self-awareness, including strengths and weaknesses.
  10. Courage & Consciousness to own and correct mistakes.
  11. Acceptance of good & bad, right & wrong in same breath.
  12. Mentoring as masterstroke to create Contemporaries!

If one action exposes Ugly Side, the opposite expounds Up Side!

It is funny, but a fact that most masters, leaders, preachers, teachers or gurus in every field believe in creating followers and tag them along (or followers hang around them). They have massive illusion of doing a great job; it’s not!

It severely limits the ability of followers to go beyond the boundaries of perception and perspective created by their leaders or masters, to bring radical or revolutionary changes and to discover realities of life.

Most leaders lead on familiar lines, encourage status quo (may be unknowingly) and have fractured belief of being a Change Agent!

The need is to do the opposite, shatter conventional methods and concentrate on competence to create contemporaries. That would be an auto-pilot to unleash the Change.

So, we need to leave a legacy of our own; not live on legacy of others!!

Truth of the Moment – what Masses follow is mostly a Mistake!

This could come as a surprise to you; but research reveals that caption statement is not a mistake! This is not a rule, which applies 100% of time; but does apply most of the time. Action of masses being on wrong side is a high tendency and perennial probability.

Look at the examples, which prove the Truth of the Moment.

What masses tend to do

  1. Triangular love n hate
    1. If you are not happy with your boss, you would start loving his bête noire.
    2. If you get hurt by someone (even when you are at fault), you lean towards one who gives you healing, even if he/she fakes or falsifies.
    3. If you see flaw, right or wrong does not matter, in the party in power, you would flirt with another sitting in opposition.
  2. Masses getting swayed by superstitions.
  3. Person with power, position, popularity and/or prosperity gains prominence among public and press, even if his persona is poor!
  4. Fiery and flamboyant communicators are always construed by companies and communities as leaders!
  5. Everyone loves those companies giving handsome salary hikes, shops giving hefty discounts, governments giving tax exemptions, even if it means these establishments going bankrupt and everyone paying a higher and heavier price later!
  6. Majority does not like to prevent or pre-empt, since it wants to experience pain before it could recognize problems!
  7. Facing a setback; find a scapegoat first.
  8. In grip of surprise and suspense? Hold the breath to become breathless!
Why not exhale the breath to enjoy much more?
  9. Hopes and happiness are matters of external forces. So, hopes of most are on God and happiness on spouse or bosses!
  10. One, who could touch your pain point/s and suppressed sentiments, becomes your role model, even when he has no model solution or charismatic character.
  11. One (gentle) man from a crowd start throwing stone or bottles at public property, rest would follow suit, with no clue or qualm why they should do that!
  12. “Number of tweets admiring a Beauty” can only be outnumbered by “a wave of tweets unleashed by complains of a twitter friendly netizen (net citizen) on defects in a (beauty) product”.

There are many more examples on what masses do across the globe!

Why mind of masses tends to go wrong?

Mind is not always right, especially when it comes to collective effect of minds of masses. The paradox is it is the masses, at the same time, which has power to make or break countries, communities and companies.

  • In 90% of cases, first reaction of mind is never right, since it just a reaction, without rationale, to an action, which mind experiences. It is analogous to Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion! Masses tend to act of 1st i.e. spontaneous reaction of mind!!
  • Majority of individuals has insecure feeling, as it lacks inherent strength of character and intellect. This makes most individuals to look at neighborhood i.e. they are overwhelmed by Neighbor’s Syndrome.
  • When emotions get evoked, it is very easy for our mind to get engaged and polarization of opinion happens at fast pace.
These emotions + polarization of opinion thereby lead to what is known as “Mass Mentality”. It also, now, makes it clear that what masses follow is not based upon any logic or rationale!

How to keep your mind on right course?

  • Watch out for mass hype, hysteria or heroism. Most of these would be hypocrisies and lure you, because of illusion; these are able to create in your mind. Wise thing would be to shun these.
  • Roads most traveled look tempting; but these would not be free from rough patches and erosion! Your fear that you would miss something by not following those roads is false.
So, be bold to follow routes, less traveled. You would discover new experience and confidence.
  • The world that you see starts from you and would end with you. So, why should others drive and impact you and your world? You need to drive them. You must observe, listen or hear and learn from others; but develop your own conscience and consciousness.
  • There is one aspect, which you need to tread carefully –
The faith you follow would always have elements of masses and mythology, dogmas and doctrines. But at the core, all faiths favor “Help everyone; but hurt no one!” Disregard its adulterated version, if you come across. If you keep this simple principle at the apex level of all of your responses, you would do very well.

With above, you can master the Mind and Masses; not the other way round!!

We are killing our Innovative & Creative character by living in silos!

Everyone has or can develop creative and innovative elements in her/his character; but these come to surface depending upon how strongly or loosely she/he is shackled in her/his paradigm. To be creative or innovative is fundamental to our success; we seldom realize this! From housewives to heads of corporates and countries need these, if they want to live a life, which is easy yet eventful; fun but fruitful!!

In corporate world, we have a common catchphrase or cliché – thinking out of the box or thinking outside of the box. It more refers to think differently and seek new and novel solutions. This very much needs innovative and creative nature; but, here we are talking of a major step forward – do it most time and see how life gets transformed! The need is to get out of whatever you want to call it – the box, compartment, cell, shell or silo – for good.

Some argue that how can we get out of the box, because there is no space outside. The moment we talk about a box, we logically or scientifically imply that there is space (in present context, not physical but a mental one) outside! It is this space, which gives us understanding of the shape or psychological feeling of the box; otherwise it would be something undefinable!!

What inhibits us to be Innovative and Creative!

There are no few factors –

  1. Hallmarks of our habits.
  2. Parochial personality.
  3. Needling notions.
  4. Hard perceptions.
  5. Throttling traits.
  6. Compartmentalized thinking
  7. Preconceived ideas.
  8. Rigid faith.
  9. Our obsession and possessiveness.
  10. Our doctrines and dogmas.
  11. Our anger and anxieties.

All of above push you into your own paradigm or silo.

Watch, who can drive you towards silo!

But, never blame them, because eventually it is always you who decides to get in silo or not.

  • Autocratic and dogmatic bosses.
  • Masters, who believe in creating “not masters”; but “followers”!
  • Ideologists.
  • Celebrities, who become your idol/s.
  • Seniors, who create fear factors.

Why your life needs Innovation and Creation

Life is all about Change. If you are dormant to Change, life would degenerate. The other option is to remain dynamic with life and then it would start to change dramatically. Believe that this would automatically induce you to be innovative. You would start to think differently; think a new and novel.

Another important aspect – you cannot be truly successful without being agile. Your agility would automatically lead to becoming innovative and creative. If you don’t, your perception that you are agile is false.

We can classify people in 3 categories:

  1. Dormant
They are immune to Changes. They suffer from either stagnancy or hyperactivity within their silos. This gives rise to 2 extremes – docile or dictatorial classes of people.
  2. Dynamic
They are most amenable and agile to Changes. Rich dividends chase them. For them, life has no boundaries. They truly enjoy freedom of thoughts and hence, are inherently innovative and creative in every sense.
This category leads to development of real talent – artists, visionaries, change agents and innovators.
  3. Dithering
They swing between dormancy and dynamism. They mostly live in the silo /cell of their paradigm and occasionally come out of it to show their solidarity for Change, Innovation and Creation. Then, they go back into their cell. This category produces mostly mediocre.

World has vast majority of category 3 and least of category 2.

What to do to abandon your silo!

  • Don’t do, what most do! Most are apparently mistaken; otherwise, they would have been free from failures or miseries.
  • Being innovative and creative is critical to your sustained success.
Many times, you may hear “Oh, it is not necessary”; just ignore because it only reflects ignorance of who says so!
  • Innovativeness and creativity are not privileges of just few by virtue of their genes or genius! You CAN and should do it!
  • Key to these qualities is “not to live in silos”.
  • You need to have WILL; do not waste time to open the silo, just smash it in 1st attempt!
If you cannot do in 1st instance, you would find it difficult to do it in 2nd or 3rd attempt. See “1-2-3 & Go”.
  • You would then have:
    • Freedom of thoughts!
    • Thinking big outside of the box!!
