Prerequisite to hold power should be commitment to empower!

Power of Empowerment! Source:http://www.flickr.com/

Those, who cannot empower their team, sub-ordinates or juniors, do not deserve to hold power, whether in companies, communities, countries or even in their personal lives! Power corrupts, when concentrated!! Power becomes a poison, when one revolves around power and does not devolve it to concerned people or participants.

What do people do, when they have power?

  • Use
    or
  • Misuse

If you are putting your power to good or right use, what would you do? You would not believe in asserting it, as your senses would suggest to you that people around you understand your power. If you have your own vision, imagination or ideas, you would take pains to make people aware of the same. You would cajole or coax them to be part of a team to help accomplish those. But you would never coerce them to do it, as that would tantamount to misuse of power! You would not command or demand either; instead you would motivate them and show the way to do it! If they succeed, you would speak well of them; but you would not like to fire, if they fail! What do these actions amount to? It is Empowerment!

On other hand, if you misuse your power, you would become autocratic; you would dictate or impose your ideas. You would go by your whims, likes and dislikes. You would be tempted to play politics. You would hold the hands of whom you like, regardless of merit. You may be able to produce results by forcing your team to perform; but that performance would not last for long. You would take credit by discrediting others!

Remember, in most organizations or institutions, power is misused in the name of leadership, albeit very subtly! There are only 10 to 15% of organizations in industrial sector, where management indeed puts power to correct use and that is one of the key reasons, responsible for their excellent performance. So, right use of power can only reside in empowerment!

Empowerment has enviable virtues and enormous power; yet very few actually understand those in corporate circles or public platforms. Therefore, it is more used as a jargon and given lip service by most bosses.

Let us first understand essence of empowerment.

Essential elements of empowerment

  1. Trust
It is most critical to put clear and complete trust on people to be empowered.
  2. Respect
Only through respect, you can motivate the people and induce ownership in them.
  3. Freedom
Without freedom to operate and take routine decisions, empowerment would be a fiasco.
  4. Laying down explicit expectations and goals
Most leaders and management miss on this, sending empowerment for a toss.
  5. Giving credit and withholding discredit
If empowered team delivers good result, head or boss must give them due credit. But, if team fails, head or boss must abstain from decrying or discrediting the team. Instead he/she should initiate corrective and improvement actions.
  6. Training
Appropriate training for people is a prerequisite, so that they understand how to perform and deliver.
  7. Coaching
Regular coaching by supervisors or seniors is necessary to keep people on course to produce the expected results.

If you carefully evaluate above 7 elements, you would conclude that these are imperatives for any leader or boss to be successful.

One, who empowers, excels!

Leader, who swears by empowerment, stands to gain terrific advantages:

  1. Effective and efficient management
  2. Transparency and consistency in organization’s performance
  3. Loyalty and infallible commitment of team members
  4. Availability of adequate time to plan and strategize business and its healthy growth
  5. Ease in driving and managing changes
  6. Develops consciousness and selflessness

One, who is empowered, enjoys!

Those, who are empowered, reap rich rewards in terms of:

  1. High degree of job satisfaction and personal accomplishment
  2. Sense of pride at work place
  3. High level of ownership and stewardship
  4. Talent/competency development
  5. Clear career path and bright prospects to grow
  6. Inculcating initiative, ethics and team spirit

A power pack mandate

Above gives a clear mandate – those, who are not committed by choice to use their power to empower employees or people down the line, should not qualify for getting power at first very place. If you find ills in private or public organizations, chief culprit is holding the power (which, in fact, is a misuse) to the chest by who are given power. Manipulation, malice, malpractices, poor performance, lack of talent development and failed business strategies emanate from concentrating power by those at the helm. It also gives rise to arrogance and ego, which organizations can ill afford!

If organizations have to be managed in a clean, credible and charismatic manner, “commitment to empowerment” should be made an essential prerequisite to select or promote anyone to the position of power, supervision or management. If this is done, then power of one pair of hands would multiply by number of pairs of hands empowered! Imagine the formidable energy, your company would have then, which can indeed help make it iconic and imaginative!

How about implementing this inference in full earnest and essence?

How a role model can mold your persona!

A Role Model; source: http://www.flickr.com/

When you get highly impressed with someone for one or more times, you have tendency to choose him/her consciously or unconsciously as your role model. At this point of time, World Football Cup fever is at its top and has caught fancy of millions. Several sports lovers have or would choose their role models; but by end of the tournament, many would also drop their role models like a hot potato!

It has been seen that whenever a political or apolitical leader starts a popular movement, public scrambles to install him/her as its role model. Winner in an election, singer in a competition or celebrity in a show suddenly finds thousands of followers, adoring him/her like no less than the God. They start to track every step or speech of the role model/s blindly. However, faster such role models rise in their popularity among followers, equally fast is their retreat! Many made Barack Obama as their role model, when he first became US President in January 2009. In little more than 5 years, his popularity has taken a severe beating and so is he position as role model with many! What has gone so bad between then and now with Obama, there is no rational explanation!!

Is that how role modeling should work?

Misnomers in making of a role model

There is a lot of confusion and illusion around who can or should be your role model! You often get impressed with a person under following situations:

  1. When person (henceforth “he” used without any gender bias) shows strength in areas, where you are weak.
  2. When person gives you impression that he can address your grievances, greed, guilt or growth.
  3. His physique and/or physical features are fascinating to you.
  4. He is able to trigger your emotions – positive or negative.
Under positive emotions, you feel more at ease, excited, enthusiastic or optimistic.
Under negative emotions, you get support from him for your fury, frustration, rebellion or dejection.
  5. He creates euphoria among his audience and you feel tempted to flow with it.
Such euphoria can be through script, speech, singing, acting, playing or like.
  6. He makes you ecstatic!
You feel mesmerized by his actions or skills for inexplicable reasons!!

All of above situations are imposing and insinuating; but role model/s selected under influence of these would be destined to failure sooner or later. Such models are actually a liability on you.

There is only one criterion, which can make your selection successful – when a person creates inspiration in you and you become thoughtful, peaceful and positive, that is the person who deserves to become your role model!

Relevance of a role model

Life is exciting, when there is continuous learning! Best and fastest learning comes by example/s!!

And a role model is always an excellent example to emulate.

A role model helps in several ways. Under crisis, your confidence can crack and convert into confusion. A role model can help restore not only your confidence, but gives you courage to emerge stronger after crisis. When you are in dilemma, he can dissolve it and drive you forward with decisions. He has deep impact on your morals and manners.

I have personally seen in many corporates how an influential boss molds culture and style of his/her folks effortlessly. To cite a real example, several sub-ordinates and secretaries in a company had developed habit of receiving visitors or responding with a style of “Hello” on phone in the same way as their highly respected boss!

The best a role model can do is to shape your character and make you charismatic! He is also your true mentor and guide!!

What does a true role model mean to you

  1. He/she is a blessing for you.
  2. He elicits inspiration in you, but not emotions.
  3. He takes away your illusions.
  4. He gives you strength.
  5. When you are at cross roads, you are most likely to remember him and you find a right road to choose!
  6. He has no conflict with your interests.
  7. He keeps your morals and hopes high during high and low cycles that you go through.
  8. He encourages you to learn but not lean on him!

In order to derive maximum benefits from your role model, you may learn his stories, but you must decipher his spirit and substance beneath; watch his actions, but assimilate his attributes; look at his images, but fathom his intentions and ideas.

So, a role model is a great asset for you, provided you make a right choice as above. Then, you would have all reasons to rejoice and reap the rewards!

“Being in rush” is being in reverse gear!

When you are running short of time, you want to make up by rushing up. If you believe that you can really make up that way, you need to rethink! Research shows that you actually lose more time; the perception that you have saved time is only an illusion!! Factually speaking, you go in reverse gear, when you do rush work.

So, what’s the deal?

State of your mind, when you are in rush

When you chose to rush, one thought pops up in your mind “I need to do it faster”, “I need to save time”, “Watch the time again and again” or “If I get late, then it would mean…” or something like that. Any one of such thought is in direct conflict with what you need, to do the work in hand.

It is this conflict of thought, which unfolds events that would actually create obstructions for you and consequently, slow you down. Seldom people realize this fact!

In urban life especially, people are in rush all the time. In rush, they don’t notice how they are putting lot of things at risk – health, happiness, blood pressure, digestion, productivity, safety and lot more, and end up doing things far less efficiently!

Being in rush triggers right side of Murphy’s Law!

All of you probably are familiar with Murphy’s Law – “if anything can go wrong, it will”. Please refer to one of the articles previously published on this site, which shows that this law is only 50% right. Under such situation of rush, this 50% plays at its peak, as you can see below:

  1. You would miss some steps or make more mistakes in work you have to complete. Most likely, you would feel irritated.
  2. Above would make you more conscious.
Moment that happens; you would start to observe what you generally ignore or you can afford to ignore. This only adds to your irritation and further slows your progress!
  3. If you are on dining table, you would most probably create a mess or while walking, stumble on an object.
  4. If you are leaving for work, you would forget to take with you something important – car or house keys, medicine, essential document or else.
  5. On the way, more traffic or red signals would add to your frustration.
  6. You may not extend your usual courtesies to people like smile or hello. If you do it however, it would be superficial!
  7. If you are conducting or addressing a meeting, you would get stuck with some issue or it would be ineffective.

There are several other hiccups, you would face while in rush and then, you tend to be rash. Often people don’t treat these as consequences of being in rush and hence they end up repeating same mistake over and over again.

In short, whether you are engaged in dialog, discussion, duties or any other work, hastiness would hit your dedication, diligence, productivity, fairness and focus!

Your options, if you have to rush

You have 2 options:

  • Focus fully just on one task at a time in hand.
You would save maximum possible time and be most efficient.
    Or
  • Decide before hand, what you can skip to save time and do the balance.

Key takeaways

  1. To rush is regressive and would make you rash!
  2. When time is shorter than what is needed, it is a very normal tendency of humans to rush.
  3. Biggest source of your troubles and trauma is “Conflicts of your thoughts”, when you rush!
  4. Working in haste is actually multi-tasking, since you are working on the task; at the same time, you are worrying that you are losing time.
Most do believe in multi-tasking; but it is actually mutilating!
  5. If you can practice “doing one task at a time with no conflict of thoughts”, you would rarely have to be in rush!

By-product of practice vide point 5 is – you would become supremely sharp and suave, confident and charismatic!

Truth of the Moment – what Masses follow is mostly a Mistake!

This could come as a surprise to you; but research reveals that caption statement is not a mistake! This is not a rule, which applies 100% of time; but does apply most of the time. Action of masses being on wrong side is a high tendency and perennial probability.

Look at the examples, which prove the Truth of the Moment.

What masses tend to do

  1. Triangular love n hate
    1. If you are not happy with your boss, you would start loving his bête noire.
    2. If you get hurt by someone (even when you are at fault), you lean towards one who gives you healing, even if he/she fakes or falsifies.
    3. If you see flaw, right or wrong does not matter, in the party in power, you would flirt with another sitting in opposition.
  2. Masses getting swayed by superstitions.
  3. Person with power, position, popularity and/or prosperity gains prominence among public and press, even if his persona is poor!
  4. Fiery and flamboyant communicators are always construed by companies and communities as leaders!
  5. Everyone loves those companies giving handsome salary hikes, shops giving hefty discounts, governments giving tax exemptions, even if it means these establishments going bankrupt and everyone paying a higher and heavier price later!
  6. Majority does not like to prevent or pre-empt, since it wants to experience pain before it could recognize problems!
  7. Facing a setback; find a scapegoat first.
  8. In grip of surprise and suspense? Hold the breath to become breathless!
Why not exhale the breath to enjoy much more?
  9. Hopes and happiness are matters of external forces. So, hopes of most are on God and happiness on spouse or bosses!
  10. One, who could touch your pain point/s and suppressed sentiments, becomes your role model, even when he has no model solution or charismatic character.
  11. One (gentle) man from a crowd start throwing stone or bottles at public property, rest would follow suit, with no clue or qualm why they should do that!
  12. “Number of tweets admiring a Beauty” can only be outnumbered by “a wave of tweets unleashed by complains of a twitter friendly netizen (net citizen) on defects in a (beauty) product”.

There are many more examples on what masses do across the globe!

Why mind of masses tends to go wrong?

Mind is not always right, especially when it comes to collective effect of minds of masses. The paradox is it is the masses, at the same time, which has power to make or break countries, communities and companies.

  • In 90% of cases, first reaction of mind is never right, since it just a reaction, without rationale, to an action, which mind experiences. It is analogous to Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion! Masses tend to act of 1st i.e. spontaneous reaction of mind!!
  • Majority of individuals has insecure feeling, as it lacks inherent strength of character and intellect. This makes most individuals to look at neighborhood i.e. they are overwhelmed by Neighbor’s Syndrome.
  • When emotions get evoked, it is very easy for our mind to get engaged and polarization of opinion happens at fast pace.
These emotions + polarization of opinion thereby lead to what is known as “Mass Mentality”. It also, now, makes it clear that what masses follow is not based upon any logic or rationale!

How to keep your mind on right course?

  • Watch out for mass hype, hysteria or heroism. Most of these would be hypocrisies and lure you, because of illusion; these are able to create in your mind. Wise thing would be to shun these.
  • Roads most traveled look tempting; but these would not be free from rough patches and erosion! Your fear that you would miss something by not following those roads is false.
So, be bold to follow routes, less traveled. You would discover new experience and confidence.
  • The world that you see starts from you and would end with you. So, why should others drive and impact you and your world? You need to drive them. You must observe, listen or hear and learn from others; but develop your own conscience and consciousness.
  • There is one aspect, which you need to tread carefully –
The faith you follow would always have elements of masses and mythology, dogmas and doctrines. But at the core, all faiths favor “Help everyone; but hurt no one!” Disregard its adulterated version, if you come across. If you keep this simple principle at the apex level of all of your responses, you would do very well.

With above, you can master the Mind and Masses; not the other way round!!

Why most Leaders and Legends fall!

Today, we need to ask and answer 2 questions:

  1. Is it a nature’s law that leaders and legends would fall in any case?
  2. If one has to fall in any case, is it worth going up the ladder of leadership and legendary?

It is a stark reality that what goes up, comes down; excellence brings adversity; when going is good, greed would take the grip and so on! There are countless examples in your home, neighborhood, company and countries world over. Some famous examples for the fall are musical genius Michael Jackson, soccer supremo Diego Maradona, cyclist legend Lance Armstrong, Citibank’s CEO until recently & leader Vikram Pandit and so on.

What drives you up and what drags you down

There are remarkable characteristics of individuals, which make them different, distinct and dazzle; help them to ascend to great height and status. However, during such upward journey, a stage comes when these very characteristics reach extreme end of their scale, put them in retrograde mode and reverse the direction of their rise!

See below some of such characteristics, which are cause of rise as well as fall!

  1. UpTalent & Traits –> Confidence –> Achievements –> High confidence –>
Down – Over confidence –> Arrogance
  2. UpFocus –> Attention to details –> Good results –> Fervor –>
    Down – Finicky –> Fanaticism
  3. UpEmpathy –> People friendly –> Popularity –>
Down – Excessively extrovert –> People weakness & vulnerability
  4. UpPassion –> Ambition –> Accomplishments –> Raising bar –> Perfection –>
    Down – Impatience –> Toxic
  5. UpInspiration –> Success –> Aspiration –> Appetite for more success –>
    DownGreed becoming greater than God!
  6. UpIdeals –> Credibility –> Creating impact –> Transforming into Idol –>
Down – Image blues –> Maneuver or Manipulation –> Malice

Above clearly shows how the very qualities, which are highly admirable, can turn into adversity. You can now relate how several Celebrities and Charismatic personalities climbed up in their performance and popularity, and then came down.

Above also unveils an important fact – every characteristic or quality has a range from “plus” to “minus” and is like Inverse V. Its apex is the climax of positive part of a characteristic. On one arm of this V, degree of positivity of given quality increases on way up to the apex point and on 2nd arm, negativity increases on its way down! It is also very interesting that each journey, way up or down, is One Way Road!! That means you cannot come down from the road you climbed up!!!

Is the Fall inevitable?

No, it is not; but at apex, it is highly imminent, unless you play it very cautiously. Normally, people get hooked on to success, popularity, performance, publicity or power at climax and they refuse to see the reality of vulnerability! This is the precise reason of their getting pulled down.

Best choices available:

  • Quit at Climax gracefully.
  • Allow and accept a climb down to a certain point, which would preserve your credibility and courage. Swing between this level and apex.
This happens to many successful people and organizations unconsciously. They race to the top, only to lose later to lower positions and then again race to top thru new strategies or renewed strengths!
  • Stay at climax consciously and carefully, discover another peak and start to race up higher. This is a tough option; but not impossible.

Is it worth going-up, only to come down?

In this question are important lessons to learn!

  • If you remain static or stagnant, you are sure to degenerate or degrade. So, without you having to do anything, you are surely going to go down.
If you are complacent or comfortable wherever you are, then at one stage you would start to get hurt, when your peers, neighbors or bête noires start to go past you in status or position.
  • As time passes, you would always need more resources. Remaining dormant would only damage your sleep and security.
  • Life is lively and worth living, only when you crave and craft for “Change n Challenge”!

Therefore, do not be under any illusion that nature would allow you to remain stagnant in true sense – either you can go up or go down!!

Going-up is a Glory and consciously quitting or coming down is a Grace!!!
